1.What influenced your view of the flower?
Our location, as well as the perspective we had of the flower influenced our view of the flower. Thus the angle from which we saw the flower was different for each one of us. Depending on how close we were to the object, our outlook also changed.
2.Did all students see the same thing? Reflect.
No, I don’t think we all saw the same thing because we all sat in different places. Also, we all have different imaginations. Our imaginations and prior conceptions influence the way we view things. Hence, although we say the same physical object, our descriptions of it were diverse.
3.What is the relationship between the flower and the picture?
The relationship between the flower and the picture is the shape of the flower. This is because we all drew the flower differently since we have different perspectives.
4..What is missing from the picture? Reflect.
Things that were missing in my picture were the dead leaf, colors of flowers and the surroundings. I missed the dead leaf because the place I was sitting was far away from where the flower was placed. I could not be able to use suitable colors for the drawing because I was given a black colored marker. I did not include the surroundings because I was not sure if we were meant to include the surroundings in our drawings. Also, I had some difficulties drawing the flower and surroundings from my position because people were crowding at the front and I did not have my glasses.
5.How did you judge what is the best picture? Reflect.
I judged the best picture by how well the proportion of the flower was drawn and the amount of detail included in the picture. I personally think that proportion and detail in any kind of drawing are important because these factors make a picture look revealing and expressive.
6.Substitute “knowledge” for the flower. Examine the influences on your knowledge and the way you view the world.
We all have different views of the flower because we all see things differently. We all have different kinds of knowledge about different things, so we see things from different perspectives and image differently.
7.You were asked to pick the “best” flower. What does the “best” mean?
To pick the best drawing to me is to evaluate how close the original object looks is to the drawing, in this case, a flower. Also, I would judge the best flower by measures of proportion, shape, and the color coordination of the person’s drawing. Therefore, even if the drawing of flower does not perfectly match the flower, as long as the measures that I’ve mentioned previously are well determined, then it will make the best flower. However, not everyone has the same opinion as me. Some people might think that the best drawing is defined by how similar the picture is to the object. Therefore, depending on the standards used, the “best” flower could be any kind of drawing. It all depends on what people want to see and look for in a picture when picking the best flower.

To a Daughter Leaving Home
Linda Pastan
When I taught you
at eight to ride
a bicycle, loping along
beside you
as you wobbled away
on two round wheels,
my own mouth rounding
in surprise when you pulled
ahead down the curved
path of the park,
I kept waiting
for the thud
of your crash as I
sprinted to catch up,
while you grew
smaller, more breakable
with distance,
pumping, pumping
for your life, screaming
with laughter,
the hair flapping
behind you like a
handkerchief waving
goodbye.
The poem “To a Daughter Leaving home” is about a mother who retells about her daughter’s childhood by when she first rode on the bicycle till now. By retelling her daughters childhood by a bicycle, it shows that first she started off practicing with her mother, but soon when her daughter gets used to it, she doesn’t need her mother’s help, so she goes further away from her mother. From this, it tells that her daughter is growing and spending less time with her. All the help she got from her mother and some family time is fading away and her mother misses the past dearly.
The author Linda Pastan described this poem by a second person, using “I” in a sentence. The style of this poem was all in small letters except for the beginning of the sentence. Also everything is written in one stanza.
The literacy devices used in this poem created cheerless tone. By using the devices, the idea of how this author wants us to tell about the poem deepens, and also it shows us some hopeless images. For examples, I kept waiting for the thud of your crash as I sprinted to catch up while you grew.” This sentence makes us feel sadness and also by saying, “ waiting her to crash,” it shows that her mother is proud of her growth but in the same time, she doesn’t want her to move away so quickly. The author used simile and onomatopoeia in this sentence. Linda Pastan used variety of devices such as onomatopoeia, symbols, similes, cacophony, rhythm, rhyming words and personification.
However the simile I just explained about reminds me of this movie “Changeling.” This movie was based on non-fictional story and it is about a mother who tries to find her missing son. But one day about a year later on, she got a call from a police saying that her son was found. But when he came back, she realized that it was not him. So she tries to find her real son by asking the cops for help again and all the people who she thought could help her. But then they refuse her help and only think about her as a psycho lady and also they thought that she hasn’t seen him for a long time, which she forgot how the boy looked like. After that, she was sent to a mental hospital because people could not do anything else with her. But even though, people thought she was crazy, she still did not give up and she tries as hard as she can to find him. One of the scenes in the movie that reminded me of this poem was, when his mother was holding a handkerchief and telling him goodbye and also she was holding a handkerchief when she was crying for him to come back. Which in the poem it said the hair flapping
behind you like a
handkerchief waving
goodbye.
The movie “Changeling” and the poem “ To a Daughter Leaving Home,” may seems to have quite a difference but however the way how mother feels about her child in the movie and in the poem has a strong feelings which reminded me while I was reading this poem.
The overall effect of this poem was full of sorrow ness. It makes us feel this way because of the style of this poem was written and as well as the devices used in this poem. Even though, the description of her mother was not shown, we could visualize her mother’s facial expression or her action by the way this poem was written.

I have read this book called ” Julie of the Wolves,” by Jean Craighead George. It is about an eskimo girl named Julie who lives in Alaska. She had an ordinary life as usual. But one day, when her father went on hunting, he promised her to come back before noon. Even though she waited and waited he didn’t come back, and a day and night passed, he still didn’t come back. She had only her father to take care for her, because her mother died long time ago due to the illness. So she was in a stage of loneliness. She had no food or a compass. Julie has to survive herself from now on, because she had no one to take care of her in the wilderness. But from the skills she learnt from her father, one day she went on hunting by herself. She saw a wolf tries to attack her. But for somehow she was able to communicate with the wolf. From escaping from the past she survives by joining the wolf pack. First it was hard for her to fit into the new environment by eating what the wolves eats, hunting and living in the new habitat. But the wolves treated her nicely and helped her a lot, which let her to survive in a completely new lifestyle. After her father disappeared from hunting her living condition changed dramatically. As I read this book, I found very interesting on how Julie communicate with the wolves and tries to fit in into the new environment.

In English class, we have read this book called ‘Of Mice and Men’ by Steve Steinbeck. After reading this book, we also watched the movie based on the same story as the book.
When I first heard about ‘Of Mice and Men’, I thought it was a story about two ordinary guys during the Great Depression in America, who tried to escape from their hard life they were facing. But when I actually read this book during English class, the story was way beyond what I imagined. I really enjoyed reading how the two main characters, George Milton and Lennie Small tries to escape from what they have done in the past and how they start off a new life by working at the Tyler’s Ranch. At the ranch many good things and also bad things happened, which was very exciting and thrilling to read. Especially, Lennie Small’s actions was interesting through out the chapters. His character was based on a mental guy who was known by a mental illness which spread widely during America’s Great Depression. In the book his habits and the phrases he used were quite funny. This was revealed more in the movie; I was able to see and hear how this character was actually like. However without the support from the book, I will not feel this way during the movie so I’m glad that I was able to read this book at first.
A memorable scene and chapter ‘Of Mice and Men’ are both the same. It was a part where Candy’s dog got shot by the back of his head. I felt very sorry for Candy. Euthanasia maybe the right choice because his dog was so old and it must’ve been better than seeing him suffering to death. But the details from the book were full of sadness, and also in the movie Candy’s facial expression and his actions were very emotional towards his loving dog, so when Carlson took his dog away and the sound of gunshot soon appeared, my eyes were the in full of tears and sadness.
I personally enjoyed reading the book ‘Of Mice and Men.’ There were some difference between the book and the movie, which was quite interesting to see. Such as the ending of the book and the movie was quite different. I like the movie as well, but the book gave me more description on the idea of how things were like during the great depression. The author, Steve Steinbeck described about the Great Depression in California by including some aspects that happened during 1930’s in his book ‘Of Mice and Men.’ I think in the book, it reveals more details and ideas. However I’m glad that I was able to watch a movie as well because I can actually visualize each chapter.

In our English class, we recently read this famous book called “Macbeth” by William Shakespeare. I’ve learned few important lessons by reading this book.
In the book “Macbeth”, there is a main character named Macbeth. The witches’ prophecies told him that he’ll become a king one day. By knowing that, he planned to murder the king with his wife, Lady Macbeth.
What I found interesting about this book was, that when Macbeth murdered the king he had to keep on killing other innocent people, because there were witnesses and people may discover that he had killed the king. Macbeth continued to murder, even though he didn’t want to. At the end, he was killed by his own army because no one trusted him. So what I thought was if you did something bad and lied to cover it, the lies might accumulate and eventually you need to keep on lying, even to people who you trust. As a consequence, you might lose your important relationships including your friends and family. Also you might loose your trust and no one would believe you anymore.
From reading “Macbeth”, I’ve learned that, getting what you want is just selfish things to do and also, lieing to other people to get what you want would cause a big problem. One day if you look back, it will all be too late to undo all the bad things you have done. I don’t want to ended up like Macbeth so I thought that before I’ll make a decision think whether it is good or not.

I’ve recently read a book called “Twilight” by Stephenie Meyer. This book is a non fictional stories based on Romance.
Twilight sets itself in a modern period, at an ordinary high school. It is a story of a girl named Bella Swan who falls in love with a guy named Edward Cullen. On her seventeenth birthday, she started to live with her father in Arizona because of family reasons. She didn’t want to settle into a new school without knowing anyone out there, but she wasn’t expecting to live with her long-parted father, or to move anywhere else. But when she attended the school, Bella was able to make some friends and met this guy named Edward Cullen. Edward is one of the main characters of the book who has very pale skin with a perfect face and is breathtakingly beautiful. Unlike him, she was not the prettiest girl in school and there was nothing really special about her. But, for some how they ended up sitting next to each other in science class. From that incident, they became friends. Edward was unexpectedly talking to someone – he is usually very independent and did not talk to random people at school. He treated her very nicely and guess what… She was completely, madly, in love with him! When her friends invited her to the beach, a guy named Jacob Black told her about few legends that were taking place in Fork. He told her about the “cold ones” described as blood drinkers. They hunt humans and animals and were also known as Vampires. Jacob told Bella something extremely shocking… She found out that Cullen’s family were vampires. Bella thought, no wonder something was always wrong with that family. She was panicked for a while, but she was hopelessly still in love with the vampire… As their relationships went further and further, she thought that he might only be after her blood.
I really like the part where Jacob told Bella about the legends in Forks, and she discovered that Edward was a vampire. This chapter was very thrilling and full of excitement. This part is one of the main things that happened in the book, and knowing this, this story continues.
When I first heard about this book, I wasn’t that interested at all. But all the sudden when I actually read this book, I could not stop reading it! Usually, I don’t read books about Vampires, but this book is something different. Something very special. This book continues until series 4. I am planning to read all of the series and I can’t wait to know what is going to happen next. I would recommend this book ” Twilight” to people who likes to read romance and vampires. Whether or not it sound interesting, just go for it. Maybe, you’ll find this book very appealing.

Recently, I’ve watched a movie called “27 Dresses.” This was a very romantic movie based on human drama. It was about a girl named Jane who loves to attend peoples’ weddings. She started to like to go to weddings when she was six. She found out that going to weddings and helping the brides set up their weddings were very helpful. Moreover, she just loved to go to the weddings – she thought that marrying was one of the important events in life, and being able to help that important life-event made her happy and proud.
Going to the wedding, setting up the church, and finding the dresses were her hobbies. Nothing was special about her. She was just a normal person who had an ordinary job, having fun with her friends, and falling in love with guys like normal people did.
One day, she went to a wedding and she met this guy named Kevin. He was a writer. His task was to write about a wedding. While he was at the weddings, he was very curious about her because he saw her coordinating different weddings on the same day. He asked her about her, and eventually he wrote a story on her. He hadn’t told her about his article, neither his job, and the story covered a full page of the newspaper. When she found the page, she was very disappointed and embarrassed. She thought that his friendliness was a lie, and that he just used her for his article.
In truth, his boss decided to print the article even though Kevin didn’t want it to be printed. After a few days, he apologized to her and she felt much better. She was thinking about the time she spent with him and actually started to like him. She wanted to see him and tell him that she needed him. She went to his company to find him, and she found out that he was at a wedding. When she finally arrived at the wedding, she met Kevin and they fell in love.
I personally think this movie was very romantic. I enjoyed watching this movie so much. I recommend this movie to people who like human drama and understand the complicated emotions in relationships.
